Originally a 20x21 feet log cabin used as a school off Brogden Road, it was transformed into a church by visionary founders including Bault Williams, Shade Williams, and others. Rev. J. J. Robinson served as the first pastor, growing the church both in membership and structure.
Serving for an astounding 49 years, Rev. Mitchener was a dedicated and humble leader. Despite a fire destroying the church in 1948, services continued thanks to Primitive Baptist Church. In 1950, Deacon Frank Penny built the church at its present location on Blount Street.
Rev. Bryant alongside dedicated deacons integrated the Public Library. In 1960, the church opened its doors to Indian Freedom marchers on their way to Washington, providing food and shelter despite severe threats from the KKK.
On June 1, 1966, the members officially renamed the church to Mitchener Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in honor of Rev. Mitchener's profound spiritual leadership.
Over the decades, under the leadership of Rev. Williams Y. Davis, Rev. Nathaniel Mitchell, Rev. Martel R. Jones, and Rev. David L. Goodine, the church expanded. Additions included a new steeple, parking, the Claudette Williams Memorial Educational Fund, and stunning stained glass windows.
